How much does directional boring cost per foot?

Directional boring cost depends on pipe diameter, bore length, soil conditions, and site access. For small-diameter work (1"–4" conduit or HDPE) in typical Carolina clay or sandy soil, expect roughly $15–$40 per foot. Larger diameter (6"–12"+), longer runs, or difficult conditions such as rock, wet soil, or congested utility corridors can push pricing to $50–$100+ per foot.

What is horizontal directional drilling (HDD) and how does it work?

Horizontal directional drilling (HDD) is a trenchless installation method that threads utilities underground without opening a continuous trench. Our Vermeer drill rig pushes a steerable pilot head along a pre-planned path from an entry pit to an exit pit. A locating system tracks the head's depth and direction in real time.

Once the pilot bore is complete, we swap the head for progressively larger reamers to open the hole to the required diameter, then pull the product pipe or conduit back through in a single pass. Bentonite drilling fluid stabilizes the bore and carries cuttings back to the entry pit throughout the process.

What's the difference between directional boring and open trenching?

Open trenching cuts a continuous slot from the surface, installs the utility, and then requires backfill and surface restoration — pavement, sod, or landscaping. It is generally cheaper for short, straightforward runs in open ground where surface disruption is acceptable.

Directional boring is the right call when you need to cross an existing road, driveway, landscaped area, waterway, or structure without breaking it open. HDD also reduces restoration costs and traffic control requirements. On projects where both methods are feasible, we will tell you honestly which approach makes more sense for your budget and site conditions.

What types of utilities can be installed with HDD?

We install gas lines (natural gas and propane distribution), electrical conduit, water mains and service lines, communications cable (fiber optic, coaxial, copper), irrigation systems, outdoor lighting runs, and sleeves or casings for future utilities. Our equipment handles pipe and conduit from 1" up to 24" in diameter.

Do you handle utility locating before drilling? What about NC 811?

Yes. Before any ground disturbance, we call NC 811 (the North Carolina “Call Before You Dig” notification center) to have existing utilities marked. This is required by state law and is the first step on every job. We also offer private utility locating services using vacuum excavation and electronic locating equipment to verify depths and positions of utilities that NC 811 member companies mark on the surface.

Knowing what is already underground is critical to a safe, damage-free bore — we do not skip this step.

What permits are typically required for HDD work?

Permit requirements vary by jurisdiction and crossing type. State road crossings in North Carolina require an NCDOT Encroachment Agreement; local road crossings go through the county or municipality. Work in railroad rights-of-way requires a separate railroad company license. Waterway crossings may require Army Corps of Engineers or NC DEQ permits depending on the waterway classification.

How long does a typical directional boring project take?

A straightforward residential bore — crossing a driveway or running a single service line under a yard — usually completes in one day, including mobilization. A standard commercial or utility crossing of 100–400 feet typically runs two to four days once we are on site. Larger projects with multiple bores, significant equipment moves, or complex site conditions are scoped individually.

Can you bore under a driveway, road, or railroad?

Yes — crossing under driveways, residential streets, state highways, and railroads is one of the most common applications for our HDD equipment. Driveway crossings are usually straightforward. State highway crossings require an NCDOT Encroachment Agreement, which we can help coordinate. Railroad crossings require a license from the railroad operator and often mandate specific casing pipe, depth requirements, and insurance minimums; we have done railroad crossings and know the process.

Each crossing type has its own requirements, and we factor all of that into the project plan and timeline.

What is the maximum bore length or depth you can achieve?

Our Vermeer equipment is capable of bore lengths exceeding 1,000 feet in favorable soil conditions. Practical limits depend on soil type, entry and exit pit access, product friction, and the diameter being pulled. Most utility installations run 3–8 feet below grade. Road crossings typically require 4–6 feet of cover under the pavement; railroad and waterway crossings often require more.

Do you work for homeowners or only commercial and utility clients?

We work for both. The majority of our volume comes from utility companies, municipalities, general contractors, and DOT projects — clients like Enbridge, Duke Energy, the City of Henderson, and NCDOT Division 5 — but we also take residential jobs. Common homeowner requests include boring for irrigation systems, outdoor lighting runs, and service line replacements where open trenching would damage a driveway or established landscaping.
