Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD)

Horizontal directional drilling (also called directional boring or HDD) is a trenchless method for installing pipe and conduit underground without digging a continuous open trench. Instead of tearing up roads, driveways, landscaping, or waterways, we steer a bore beneath the surface and pull the new line back through it. The result is a clean installation with minimal surface disruption, faster site restoration, and reduced impact on traffic, existing utilities, and the surrounding environment.

Our directional drilling crews install lines from 1" to 24" in diameter, covering everything from small residential service lines to large-diameter casing and sleeve installations beneath highways and rivers. We work in residential, commercial, municipal, and utility settings throughout North Carolina, South Carolina, and Virginia.

What We Install With HDD

  • Gas lines: natural gas mains and service lines, including polyethylene and steel
  • Electrical conduit: primary and secondary distribution duct banks for power utilities
  • Water lines: municipal and private water mains and service connections
  • Communication cables: fiber, telecom, and data conduit
  • Irrigation systems: supply lines for agricultural and commercial irrigation
  • Outdoor lighting: conduit runs for site, street, and landscape lighting
  • Casing and sleeve installation: protective sleeves and large-diameter casing for road and waterway crossings

Our HDD Process

Every bore starts with planning. We review the bore path, identify and protect existing utilities, and confirm depth and clearances before any equipment breaks ground. From there we follow a proven, repeatable methodology:

  • Utility locating & bore design: we locate existing infrastructure and engineer a bore path with safe separation and proper depth of cover.
  • Pilot bore: a steerable drill head establishes the path, tracked and corrected in real time for precise placement.
  • Reaming: the bore is enlarged to the diameter needed for the product pipe.
  • Pullback: the new pipe or conduit is pulled cleanly back through the bore into final position.
  • Tie-in & restoration: we complete connections and restore entry and exit pits so the site is left clean and orderly.

Because so much of the work happens below grade, the right approach protects existing utilities and natural features while keeping the project on schedule. See examples of completed gas, electric, and water work in our project showcase below, or request a free HDD quote to discuss your bore.

Excavation Services

Not every job calls for a trenchless bore. As a full-service excavation contractor, Triple J Specialist LLC also handles open-cut excavation, site preparation, trenching, and restoration, often alongside our directional drilling work on the same project. From breaking ground to final cleanup, we manage each stage so the site is ready for the next phase of construction.

Scope of Excavation Work

  • Site preparation: clearing, grading, and prepping ground for construction and utility installation.
  • Utility locating: identifying and marking existing lines before any digging begins.
  • Trench excavation: precise trenching for utilities that are installed by open cut.
  • Material removal & debris hauling: excavating, loading, and hauling spoil and debris off site.
  • Grading & leveling: shaping and finishing grade to spec.
  • Site restoration: backfilling, compacting, and restoring the surface when work is complete.
  • Equipment rental: equipment and operator support for project needs.

How We Approach Excavation

Safety and accuracy drive every excavation. We locate existing utilities first, dig to the depth and dimensions the project requires, and protect the surrounding area throughout. Clean, well-managed job sites and careful restoration are part of how we protect your property and leave it better than we found it.
