Open-Cut Excavation for Utility Projects

Not every underground installation calls for a trenchless bore. Open-cut excavation remains the right approach for shallow installations, short runs in open ground, and situations where trench access is required for tie-ins, valves, or complex underground interfaces. Triple J Specialist LLC provides excavation support as a standalone scope and as part of integrated projects that combine open-cut work with directional drilling.

Our excavation work spans the full project lifecycle: utility locating before any digging, trench excavation to specified depth and width, shoring where required, material handling and removal, and full site restoration when the work is done.

Scope of Excavation Work

  • Utility locating — We locate and mark existing underground infrastructure before any equipment breaks ground. See our dedicated utility locating page for details on how we protect your jobsite.
  • Trench excavation — Precise trenching to the depth, width, and grade the project specification requires, whether for gas, water, electric, or communication utilities.
  • Bore pit excavation — Entry and exit pit construction for HDD operations, sized and shored to support the drill rig and pullback equipment.
  • Material removal and debris hauling — Excavating, loading, and hauling spoil, cut pavement, and construction debris off site so the project area stays clear.
  • Grading and leveling — Shaping and finishing grade to spec, including rough grading for utility corridors and fine grading for site restoration.
  • Site restoration — Backfilling, compacting, and restoring the surface after excavation is complete. See our site prep and restoration page for more.
  • Equipment and operator support — Equipment mobilization and certified operator support for project-specific excavation needs.

How We Approach Excavation

Safety and accuracy are the two non-negotiables on any excavation job. We locate existing utilities first — every time, without exception. We dig to the depth and dimensions the project calls for and protect the surrounding area throughout. Traffic control, trench shoring, and proper spoil management are part of every scope, not add-ons.

Clean, well-managed job sites protect your property and keep other trades on schedule. Careful backfill and compaction prevent surface settlement after the work is done. And proper site restoration — whether that means topsoil, sod, asphalt patching, or concrete repair — is built into how we plan every scope. We close out the site with the same attention we bring to opening it.
