Underground infrastructure — gas mains, electric distribution lines, water mains, sewer, telecom, and fiber — is documented imperfectly. As-built drawings are often inaccurate; utilities shift over time due to ground movement; undocumented lines are common, particularly in older corridors and on private property where 811 (NC One Call) marks only do not go. Hitting an unmarked line during drilling or excavation can mean a gas release, a power outage, a waterline break, or fiber cuts that take days to restore. It can also mean liability, regulatory penalties, and project delays that dwarf the cost of proper pre-construction locating.
Private utility locating — performed by a contractor with electromagnetic detection and ground-penetrating radar equipment, not just relying on 811 marks — is the correct response to that risk. On every project we perform, locating is the first step, not an option.
Directional boring presents a specific locating challenge: unlike open-cut excavation, you cannot see the path of the drill head as it advances. If an existing utility is not correctly identified before the bore begins, the drill can pass through or above it without any visible warning until a strike occurs. This makes pre-bore utility locating more critical on HDD projects than on almost any other type of underground work.
Our HDD bore design process integrates utility locating directly. We identify all known utilities crossing or paralleling the proposed bore path, pot-hole at critical crossings to confirm actual depth, and set the bore path profile to maintain required separation from every conflict. Where existing utility density makes a bore path too congested for safe clearances, we flag that before the project starts — not after the drill is already in the ground.
