What Is Horizontal Directional Drilling?

Horizontal directional drilling — also called directional boring or simply HDD — is a trenchless method for installing pipe and conduit underground without excavating a continuous open trench. A steerable drill head is guided beneath the surface along a planned bore path; once the pilot bore is complete, the hole is reamed to the required diameter and the product pipe is pulled back through it into final position.

The result is a clean, precise installation with minimal surface disruption. Where open-cut trenching would require breaking pavement, disturbing landscaping, or rerouting traffic for days, a well-executed directional bore crosses the same obstacle in a fraction of the time and with far less collateral impact. That combination — speed, precision, and low surface impact — is why engineers, GCs, and utilities specify HDD for road crossings, waterway crossings, utility main extensions, and congested right-of-way.

What We Install With HDD

Our HDD Process

A clean bore starts before the drill ever breaks ground. Every project begins with bore path engineering, utility conflict review, and pre-construction coordination. We identify existing underground infrastructure, determine required depth of cover and horizontal separation, and design a bore path that avoids conflicts and meets the project specification. From there we follow a proven, repeatable four-step field methodology:

  1. Utility locating and bore design — We locate existing underground utilities through vacuum excavation or other methods, confirm clearances, and finalize the bore path design. No drill enters the ground without a verified conflict check.
  2. Pilot bore — A steerable drill head advances along the bore path, tracked and corrected in real time using a walkover or wireline locating system. The pilot bore establishes the precise alignment and depth of the final installation.
  3. Reaming — The pilot hole is enlarged in one or more passes to the diameter required for the product pipe, with bentonite slurry circulated to stabilize the bore and carry cuttings to the surface.
  4. Pullback and tie-in — The new pipe or conduit bundle is attached to the reamer and pulled cleanly back through the bore into final position. We complete entry and exit pit connections and restore the surface to a clean, orderly condition.

Because most of the work happens below grade, the value of experience is hard to overstate: knowing how soil conditions affect tooling selection, how to read a locating system, and how to manage drilling fluid returns is the difference between a smooth bore and a costly intervention.
